Betty Crocker’s Cheese Sandwich Casserole

1. Prep

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

Grease an 8×8 or 9×9 inch baking dish.

2. Layer the base

Arrange 6 slices of bread in a single layer at the bottom of the dish.

3. Add cheese

Place one slice of cheddar on each piece of bread.

4. Top the sandwiches

Cover each with another slice of bread, forming sandwiches.

5. Make the custard

In a bowl, whisk eggs, milk, salt, mustard, and pepper until smooth.

6. Soak

Pour custard evenly over sandwiches.

Press down gently to help absorb.

Cover and refrigerate 30 minutes (or overnight).

7. Bake

Bake uncovered 50–60 minutes, until golden and set.

8. Serve

Let rest 5–10 minutes before slicing. Serve warm.
