Step 1: Prepare the Fruit Filling
Start with your fruit mixture:
- In a medium saucepan, combine the dried apples or peaches with the water.
- Bring to a boil, then cover, reduce heat, and simmer for about 30 minutes, until the fruit becomes soft and fragrant.
- Remove from heat and let cool slightly. If the pieces are large, mash them gently.
- Stir in the sugar and butter, blending into a sweet, buttery filling. Set aside.
Step 2: Using Fresh Apples (Optional)
If you’d rather use fresh fruit, here’s how:
- Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet.
- Add 4 peeled, cored, and chopped apples.
- Sprinkle in the sugar, cinnamon, and 1 teaspoon of lemon juice.
- Cook over medium heat for about 15 minutes, or until the apples are tender.
- Lightly mash, then allow to cool before filling your pies.
Step 3: Assemble the Pies
Now it’s time to put them together:
- On a lightly floured surface, roll each biscuit into a 5-inch circle.
- Spoon about 1 tablespoon of the fruit filling onto one side of the dough.
- Moisten the edges with a little water to help them stick.
- Fold the dough over the filling and press the edges together.
- Use a floured fork to crimp and seal the edges securely.
Step 4: Fry the Pies
Time for that golden perfection:
- Pour enough vegetable oil into a deep skillet or fryer to reach about ½ inch deep.
- Heat the oil to 370°F (190°C).
- Gently place a few pies into the hot oil—avoid crowding the pan.
- Fry until beautifully golden brown, turning once for even cooking.
- Fry slowly and steadily to ensure the dough cooks all the way through.
Step 5: Finish and Serve
Almost ready to enjoy:
- Transfer the fried pies to a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.
- Let them cool for a few minutes—the filling will be very hot!
- Serve warm and savor every crispy, sweet, fruit-filled bite.
